BASIC POST CONVICTION SEX OFFENDER TESTING (PCSOT)

Who Is It For
For Law Enforcement, Probation and Parole Officers, Community Safety and Correctional Officers who are preparing for advanced career challenges, leading to leadership positions in the following departments: polygraph, major crimes, sex crimes, offender supervision, human resources and recruitment, or professional standards / internal affairs.

Non-Examiners
Treatment providers/Parole or Probation Supervisors and/or others may also attend the course. The standard course test, or written assignment, will not be required — a modified test will be administered to these students. A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded upon successful completion of the test.

Prerequisite for Basic PCSOT
To attend this training course and take the APA Final Examination, the student must have received a certificate of completion from an APA approved basic polygraph examination training course and must be a member of APA (or submit an application before the final test.)

Graduates of Non-APA Approved Polygraph Schools and Non-Members of APA: Graduates of Non-APA approved polygraph schools, or non-members of APA may attend this course, and a Backster Certificate of Attendance will be awarded.

Course Description
The Basic PCSOT course meets and exceeds the minimum guidelines established by the American Polygraph Association (APA), the Joint Polygraph Committee on Offender Testing (JPCOT), the American Association of Police Polygraphists (AAPP), the California Association of Polygraph Examiners (CAPE) and ASTM International.

This course specializes in Sex Offender Polygraph Examination Training. Upon completion of this course, the student will gain a thorough understanding of post-conviction sex offender polygraph examinations.

Students who are members of APA will have the final exam proctored by a representative of the APA. The APA will award those who complete this examination successfully with a Certificate of Completion. Students who are non-members of APA will receive a certificate of completion from The Backster School of Lie Detection

Course Outline:

  • Review History of Polygraph, APA model, PCSOT Policy, JPCOT Rule, Sexual History I, and Sexual History II
  • Understanding Parole and Probation Supervision Rules, the containment approach, victimology, deviant behaviour and treatment for sex offences.
  • Practical assignment of Offender Typology, Offender Treatment and Paraphilias
  • Learn proper PCSOT test question construction along with training to conduct Post Conviction Sex Offender Testing.
  • Case reviews of sex crimes, including appropriate interviewing and testing direction for differing sets of crimes.
  • Upon successful completion of the exam, the student will possess the requisite knowledge to conduct PCSOT polygraph examinations.

ADVANCED POST CONVICTION SEX OFFENDER TESTING (PCSOT)

For Law Enforcement, Probation and Parole Officers, Community Safety and Correctional Officers who are preparing for advanced career challenges, leading to leadership positions in the following departments: polygraph, major crimes, sex crimes, offender supervision, human resources and recruitment, or professional standards / internal affairs.

Course Description
The Advanced PCSOT course meets and exceeds the minimum guidelines established by the American Polygraph Association (APA), the Joint Polygraph Committee on Offender Testing (JPCOT), the American Association of Police Polygraphists (AAPP), the California Association of Polygraph Examiners (CAPE) and ASTM International. These guidelines require the completion of a minimum of 30 hours of specialized sex offender polygraph examination training.

Topics May Include
Upon completion of this course, the student will gain an advanced understanding of post-conviction sex offender polygraph examinations above and beyond that which are taught at the basic level. The student will become familiar with the use of risk-based assessment questions for advanced PCSOT applications.
