BASIC POLYGRAPH EXAMINER COURSE

Who Is It For
Law Enforcement and Security Professionals who are preparing for advanced career challenges, leading to leadership positions in the following departments: polygraph, major crimes, sex crimes, human resources and recruitment, or professional standards / internal affairs.

Course Description
The Basic Polygraph Examiner Course provides students with everything required to conduct valid polygraph examinations. Training includes a Structured Pre-Test designed to ensure that the test subject offers a maximum of relevant information in advance of the actual test.

Our school provides Examiners with the flexibility to customize the Pre-Test to meet your Agency’s testing requirements and legal criteria based on the goal of the examination, be it: supporting law enforcement investigations into major crimes, sexual crimes, pre-employment testing or national security personnel security screening and vetting.

Course Outline

  • A 10-Week APA Accredited Academic and Training Course of theory and practice invalidated polygraph examinations.
  • The Backster School of Lie Detection meets all requirements for polygraph examiners who wish to become a member of the American Polygraph Association (APA), the Canadian Association of Police Polygraphists (CAPP), and the American Association of Police Polygraphists (AAPP.)
  • The course has an optimal Student to Teacher Ratio with a maximum of 12 students per instructor and delivered in a fully-equipped modern classroom.
  • Practical testing exercises take place in dedicated polygraph suites using leading-edge polygraph instruments.
  • The curriculum is designed around a five-day week with eight-hour class days.
  • Students must successfully complete weekly written examinations, homework study, a final written and practical polygraph examination.
  • Students must maintain a test grade point average of 75% and complete the final written exam with no less than 75%.
  • The final practical exam is conducted based on a mock crime scenario with role players.
  • Upon successful completion, students will receive certification after conducting a minimum of 10 polygraph examinations under indirect guidance by the course instructor.
  • Backster offers an on-going mentorship and guidance for one year after course completion.

ADVANCED POLYGRAPH TRAINING COURSE

Who Is It For
Law Enforcement and Security Professionals who are preparing for advanced career challenges, leading to leadership positions in the following departments: polygraph, major crimes, sex crimes, human resources and recruitment, or professional standards / internal affairs.

Course Description
This advanced training course is designed for Polygraph Examiners who have conducted a minimum of thirty (30) or more polygraph exams. Examiners will find the Advanced Polygraph Training course useful for those in practice where the initial polygraph training received now requires real-world ‘field experience’ or exposure to different methods employed by various agencies. The course teaches more complex methodologies which may be necessary for professional advancement within the field above and beyond basic polygraph training.

Clients also have an option to design an Advanced Polygraph Training Course based on their independent needs using the blocks of instruction within the course outline below.

Topics May Include:

  • A comparative analysis of validated polygraph test formats for more challenging cases and situations.
  • Proper use and development of either probable or directed lie comparison questions.
  • A comparative analysis of numerical scoring methods paired with the use of computer algorithms for assistance in decision making.
  • Test data analysis.
  • Reducing inconclusive exams.
  • Demystifying and dealing with countermeasures.
  • Advanced narrative interview methods with visual route maps and observation of non-verbal behavioural cues.
  • Behavioural intervention methods for defensible elicitation of information.
  • Minimizing cognitive bias and avoiding false confessions.
